RIP Roy Longman

It is with great sadness that I am reporting the passing on 4th November, of our dear friend and former treasurer, Roy Longman.  Roy was one of our longstanding members, a stalwart able to tell many a story of the Hants BSA club gone by.

For many years, Roy was our club treasurer, keeping meticulous attendance records of club nights and custodian of our subs. He confessed to not being mechanical, but you would be hard pressed to find a better collection of polished bikes.   He loved nothing more than being in his shed polishing his bikes, to the stirring music of the Royal Marines Band playing in the background.

He started his working life in the Post Office as a telegram boy.  Roy owned many bikes over the years including a Rocket Gold  Star, a Super Rocket and a Green A7.  The green A7 was the envy of many in the club.   Our current treasurer, Pat became the proud custodian of the bike a couple of years ago, when Roy decided it was time to revert to smaller bikes due to health issues.

Roy enjoyed his holidays in America, visiting every year with an almost mandatory visit to the bike auction, when it was running.  Roy also enjoyed a few visits to the bike rally in Luc-sur-Mer, France where, as a group we enjoyed a long weekend with good friends.  Roy and Christine also attended several of the long distance international rallies to New Zealand, and California.

Roy lived for many years in Stubbington and he was proud each year to welcome members of the club to show their machines at the annual village fete.  This was always well received by visitors to the event.

Whilst we now have pop-up gazebos that make our summer camp set up so much more efficient, we have fond memories of previous years’ set up.  This included a few members meeting at Roy’s lock up to move all the necessary equipment to camp.  What followed was precision, almost military action with Roy instructing the efficient erection of the marquees….no one could quite master it the same way.

Some of you may recall Bob Edney, our previous Chairman? Roy welcomed Bob to the club, and there started a beautiful friendship with Roy referring to Bob as “son” and Bob would reply “yes Dad”.   Unfortunately we lost Bob a few years back which impacted Roy deeply.  Bob’s son in law, Pete and our current Chairman, however took over where Bob left off and regularly visited Roy and his wife Christine, and occasionally brought him to club nights when Roy was unable to make it under his own steam.

Unfortunately, after working well past his official retirement age, now in house clearances, Roy was taken poorly which resulted in major surgery and rendered him reliant on his dear wife Christine.   What followed over the following year or so saw multiple hospital visits for Roy which frustrated him.  His last visit lasted several weeks and as you would imagine, he was keen to get home.  I was so pleased to receive a call from Roy on the day of his discharge from hospital; he was in good spirits and was looking forward to receiving visitors again.   This made the news that he had passed away later that day even more difficult to comprehend.

Roy was a tall man in stature and spirit and will be sadly missed.  Our love and best wishes go to his wife Christine and their family.

RIP Roy.

RIP John Morgan

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing on NYE, of our dear friend John Morgan. John's health deteriorated over recent months and he sadly lost his battle, leaving his wife Anne and a family behind.

John was one of the long term members of the club and whilst he was advancing in years he was a regular on rideouts and until only a few years ago would be a regular at helping us pitch marquees etc. ready for our camping weekend, always willing to muck in.

As with many, lockdowns through covid saw John step back from the club and saw him sell his lovely A10 - in the 15 years or so I knew John, his classic Black A10 never let him down and ran as sweet as a nut.

Occasionally John and Anne would join us on club nights and I know they met up socially with Roy and Christine, Graham and Ann and Celia and Keith.  As with all of us, we will miss him dearly - John truly was one of life's goodun's and a true gentleman.  Our love and best wishes go to Anne and her family.

RIP John - Keep riding

RIP Landlord Jim (Bold Forester)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jim, the landlord of the Bold Forester, the home for many years of Hants BSAOC. Jim's passion was classic motor cars, but he always spared time to come and have a chat with us and admire our machines on 2 wheels.  It's fair to say that Jim was very generous to us as a club and looked after us well.  Jim had retired only a few years ago to the west country.  Our best wishes go to his family.

Jim's funeral takes place at Hollybrook Cemetery, Tremona Road, Shirely, SO16 6HW Friday 17th June at 12 noon.  Jim's family have requested people wear bright colours, if possible but not essential.  Family flowers only and donations if wished will go to either diabetes or cancer charity.

A celebration of Jim's life is expected to be organised at a later date.

RIP Jim

RIP Maurice (Morrie) Jones

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing this week (May 2022) of dear Maurice.  We hadn't seen Morrie much during the covid period but he continued to be the envy of the club owning a fine example of this Y13 1937 750cc V Twin.  He is pictured here after deservedly winning the trophy for best bike at the Horndean show.

Morrie's funeral will take place at Porchester Crem 10th June at 3.30pm. Please contact Russ if you would be interested in joining a bike escort for Morrie's final journey.

Our best wishes go to Pat and the family.

RIP Morrie.  Keep riding.

RIP Harry Lyons

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Harry Lyons, who passed away recently, shortly before his 83rd birthday.  Dear Harry was a colourful character who instantly lit a room when he entered.  Whilst predominantly a Goldie member, he was an honorary Hants Branch Beezer member, often joining our conversations on club nights.  He was known for his ability to sniff out free chips from Landlord Jim at the Boldie from a mile away, but would only entertain them with a fair dollop of ketchup.

Harry was an avid and fast rider earning him the well-known title of “Mad Harry” to all of his friends until poor health got the better of him shortly before the pandemic, but his continuing rides out to the Flower Pots pub showed the tenacity of the man to get out on his beloved machines.  He was always self-sufficient and quite happy to go and explore on his own, but some of us were lucky enough a few years back to share his company during a weekend visit to Normandy.  This was when Debs and I got to really know Harry best and we know that he will be sorely missed by all who knew him.  Our best wishes go to his family.

RIP Harry, and keep riding.

Harry's funeral is taking place 22nd September at 1pm at the Oaks Crematorium, Havant.  Further details available from Russ.

RIP Bert Evans

It is with great sadness that we have to advise of the passing of one of the stalwarts of the BSA Club.  Bert, from Thames Valley Branch passed away earlier this week.

My first fond memory of Bert was a joint outing with Hants and Thames Valley (TV) BSA Branches.  We decided to meet TV at Tangmere Military Aviation Museum on what turned out to be a very wet Sunday morning.  Bert did not have any wet weather gear and improvised with black bin liners managing to cover every inch of his body - he was probably the driest of us all.

RIP Bert, keep riding.
