Saturday and Sunday Rideouts:
Corner Drop – Ride Marshalling
We use a method of marshalling known as the ‘Corner Drop’, or ‘Lay-off’ system. This is a much better way to ride in a large group and the riding is more progressive reducing the need to wait around for everyone to catch up & nobody should get lost.
The system is very simple:
The run leader indicates to the second rider in the group to pull over every time a junction turning is passed through, to temporarily act as a marshall for every other group rider to pass him. It is imperative for this system to work that he holds his junction & waits for the nominated ‘tail’ rider to come into sight. The ‘marshall’ then rejoins the group just in front of the tail rider.
Both the tail rider & the run leader are the only 2 riders to hold their station in the group ride. The remaining riders move up through the group progressively until they reach the second position to repeat the cycle.
Riding this way caters for all bike styles and provides a satisfying ride for everyone. If there is a problem within the group that causes the tail rider not to appear eventually this will become evident to the run leader & every temporary marshal can be collected by the run leader as he retraces the run route.
A variation for back-up vehicles, sidecars etc (those that may prove an obstacle to this marshalling method) to accompany or act as the tail rider can be agreed & communicated to the rest of the group. The run leader can nominate re-group points on the route in advance if needed.
